Abstract


Historiography of education during the Dutch Colonial Period can be considered as an important background for educational development after the independence, and yet only a little about it has been discussed in the literature. The present study is aimed at obtaining clear description about the patterns, objectives, activities, choices for the students, teacher appointment, and curriculum of the educational programs during the colonial period. The data were collected through documentary studies, literature reviews, and interviews with resource persons. The data were then rechecked through internal as well as external critiques. By using historical analysis, the study shows that the educational policy during the colonial period was set in accordance with the government policy and its economic policy to produce mid-and low-level manpower.
