Abstract

Abstract: Environmental Chemistry learning has important roles in a long term, i.e. to give an understanding and awareness about the environment. In recent two years, the mean of the students’ final scores of Environmental Chemistry in the Department of Chemistry of FMIPA State University of Malang was less satisfactory. A survey indicated that the instruction method which was not interesting and boring made the students’ achievement not satisfactory. This research objective is to examine the effectiveness of Problem-Based Learning (PBL) model in Environmental Chemistry learning. The results show that 1) there is a significant difference between the students’ achievement increase of the lower and the higher initial capability students using the PBL model, especially in the lithosphere topic, 2) the influence of PBL model application for improving student’s environmental awareness was not significantly enough, 3) there is a positive correlation between students’ achievement of Environmental Chemistry subject with the students’ environmental awareness level, and 4) the students’ perception about PBL model application in Environmental Chemistry learning was positive.
