Penerapan Program ‘English Hours’ dalam Pembelajaran Bahasa Inggris Di Sekolah Dasar

Abstract


An English Hour program is an English language learning activity organized in addition to the teaching-learning hours offered by the school. Characteristics of this program is conducted during the school hours, lasting for abot 30 minutes 3 or 4 times each day, and involving all school teachers and students. An investigation was then conducted in order to describe the extent the program influenced the student’s speaking ability inside the classroom and outside the classroom. The study was condcuted qualitatively, where observation and interviews were employed to collect data. The results shows that, with the program, the students’ ability to speak English is better than before the program was launch. This is made possible because the program has offered students more opportunities to speak English with anyone at school—with their teachers and other schoolchildren. The program has created a small English speaking community made by the students and for the students themselves.
