Abstract

Abstract: This study was aimed to identify the effect of nicotine on their reproductive capability, fetal external organ abnormalities, as well as skeletal and internal organ abnormalities of pregnant mice. Seventy two female mice strain Balb C  were insed in this study. The mice were mated with male mice used one mating method. Pregnant female mice were grouped based on their gestation day 8, day 10, and day 12 was injected intraperitoneally with 3, 6, and 12 mg/kg BW nicotine dissolved in aquabidestylata. At gestation day 18, the mice were sacrificed and external organ abnormalities were observed. Bone staining was subsequently done using Alizarin Read S. Results were analyzed using SPSS program version 11 for personal computer, two-way ANOVA, and multiple comparison test with significance level of 0.05. Abnormality in extremities presented as talipes. The highest proportion of talipes prevalence, 6.25%, was found at gestation day 8, with nicotine dose of 12 mg/kg BW. Delayed supraoccipital bone formation occurred primarily at gestation day 8 and 12 with the dose of 12 mg/kg BW. Delayed caudal bone formation was observed particularly at gestation day 10 and 12 with the dose of 6 and 12 mg/kg BW.
