Abstract

This research describes the views of liberal Islam activists on pluralism. This topic was deliberately chosen as a part of ongoing attempts to develop the concepts of pluralism to strengthen the epistemological basis of religious studies. So far, the concept of pluralism has not been employed in religious studies. Consequently, in studying other religious traditions, religious studies give more emphasis on the contradictory aspects that potentially lead to creation of culture of violence. This research reveals, liberal Islam activists have constructive views on religious diversity. In their views, the diversity of religions should not be grasped in term of differences. Rather, it is also important to seek a common platform among those religions that enable them to perform dialogue and cooperation. In order to develop these constructive views, the activists of liberal Islam also recommend pluralism as an epistemic basis for the development of religious studies.
