Abstract

The objective of this study is to describe gesture of pointing and gesture representational which appropriate to the level of thinking of van Hiele. This study used a qualitative approach which is included into descriptive exploratory study. The subjects of this study are 6 students of 8th graders of SMP Negeri 3 Balikpapan. The selected subjects of this study consisted of two students with the level of understanding 0 (recognition), 2 students with the level of understanding 1 (analysis), and 2 students with the level of understanding 2 (order). The gestures were observed when students solved the problems in groups. The result showed that the gesture of pointing and gesture representational which were used by the students when solving problems in groups appropriate to the characteristics of the understanding level that is owned by the students.
