Development of E-LKPD Assisted by PhET Colorado Based on Discovery Learning: Critical Thinking Skills on Light Material at Junior High School

Flora Yani Saragih, Pintor Simamora

Abstract

Critical thinking is necessary for 21st-century pupils, but PISA data suggest that Indonesian students, especially junior high school students, lack it. The junior high science/physics light material is abstract and involves in-depth reasoning (reflection, refraction, and shadow generation). Without critical thinking, kids memorize formulas or notions without analyzing real phenomena. Discovery learning involves pupils discovering concepts via observation and experimentation. Critical thinking requires initiative, exploration, and reasoning, which these foster. Therefore, this study aims to develop E-LKPD based on Discovery Learning assisted by an interactive simulation of PhET Colorado to strengthen the critical thinking skills of grade VIII students on light materials at junior high school 27 Medan. The research method used is the development of the ADDIE (Analysis, Design, Development, Implementation, Evaluation) model. Validation is carried out by material experts, design experts, and linguists. The validation results indicated that E-LKPD was declared very feasible with an average score of 88% by material experts, 69% by design experts, and 83% by linguists. The implementation with the students showed a positive response of 96.5%, and the teachers’ 100%. The results of the effectiveness test showed a significant increase in critical thinking skills with an average N-Gain of 0.6 (medium category). This study concludes that the developed E-LKPD is feasible and effective in the learning process to improve students' critical thinking skills.
