Abstract


Abstract: The purpose of this study was to investigate the theory which used to develop reading instruction policy in kindergarten. The variables taken into account in this study were family reading culture, existing literacy material for child at home, family literacy activities, emergent literacy, acivities of child in reading instruction, reading ability, and relationship model of them. The study used multi stage cluster random sampling technique to get 621 kindergarteners in Sidoarjo Regency, Eat Java Province as the subjects of it. Moreover, the study applied questionnaire, test, and observation method to collect data. Then a structural equation model was used to analyze the data. The result of this study shows that family reading culture and existing literacy material for child at home have significantly effect on emergent literacy, activities of child in reading instruction, and reading ability, while family literacy activities with child has only significantly effect on emergent literacy. Furthermore, emergent literacy has significantly effect on the activities of child in reading instruction and child reading ability.  Finally, there is significantly effect the activities of child in reading instruction on child reading ability. The implication of the relationship model is teachers should be given authority to conduct reading instruction consider the emergent literacy of kindergarteners.
