Abstract


The existence of Salafiyah religious school (pesantren) in the process of modernization invites arguments among educational and social science experts. Some argue that it is a traditional and exclusive school which is difficult to develop. Some others say that it will remain to exist because it is traditional and unique, and its birth meets the needs of society. The mutual interaction makes the school exist and develop. People let their children enter the school due to tradition, emotion, orientation of value, and instrumental rational reason. These supports will change as their motivation changes.
