Abstract

Abstract: The aim of this study is to describe the recursive and explicit strategies of algebraic generalization used by 11st grade students based on their cognitive styles and used descriptive qualitative methodology. The subject consisted of 3 field dependent and 3 field independent students. Given 2 tasks to determine the strategies used by students. The problem given are related to near and far generalization. The recursive strategy requires the subject to know the relationship of each term to determine the pattern, whereas the explicit strategy allows the subject to use various rules accordingly. The results show that FD and FI subject use recursive strategy for near generalization problem. But for far generalization problem, FD use recursive and FI use explisit strategy. The findings of this study is there was one subjecf of FI that use recursive strategy for far generalization problem.
